Chapter Eight

~ Evan ~

I’m storming through the house like a mad man. The looks from the staff as I make my way, cussing up a storm, don’t faze me. They’ve never seen this side of me, but I don’t give a damn. Even my mother retreats when she sees me, merely asking if everything is okay.

“It will be soon enough,” I reply, taking the stairs two at a time.

I need to find Zoey and demand she come clean with me. If she’s in trouble, why didn’t she tell me? And who the hell is the father of her child? A child I’m claiming as mine, as well. If that’s Zoey’s reason for keeping me away, she’s about to learn I don’t give a shit about that. I’ve always loved kids and hoped to have plenty of my own. Guess she took care of the first one for us. One thing is for sure, this changes nothing. Zoey is my forever.

Keeping a level head as I enter her guestroom is harder than one would think. I can’t afford to scare her off and have her run. Zoey isn’t leaving until I know everything she’s hiding.

Yanking the door open, I rush in, only to come into an empty room. I search around it for any indication she’s left. Just then, I hear her in the bathroom. She must still be soaking in the bath. I head in that direction. My hand goes to the doorknob when the sound of her talking on the phone paralyzes me. Pressing up to the door, I concentrate on her voice.

“Is Autumn up from her nap yet? I haven’t heard her voice all day.”

There’s a pause, then Zoey giggles. “Are you being a good girl for Aunt Rue? There’s no ice cream if you misbehave.”

Autumn has to be her daughter. As for Rue, Cedric didn’t name any relatives. In fact, he made it clear she was alone in the world after shocking me about having a daughter. I wasn’t about to disturb this mother-daughter moment, so I sit back in the recliner and wait for her to come out. I need some time of my own to get some clarity, anyway. How would I approach the subject with some finesse? It’s not my strong suit by any means.

My head is hung low, my arms resting on my spread-out legs when the door opens.

“Evan! You startled me.”

I look up, and my breath leaves me. She’s wrapped in a towel, wet strands of hair falling on her shoulders. Droplets of water speed down her flesh, and fuck, if she doesn’t look sexy. It wouldn’t take much to throw her on the bed and make her mine. Hell, I’m fighting the urge to do just that. To finally get inside that sweet pussy of hers and make her confess secrets while I’m deep inside where I belong.

However, my baser needs will have to wait until I get the truth. I need to reassure Zoey I’m here for her. And our kid.
